Roller Skating

“Roller Skating” by Abstenia St. Leger Eberle

This is a sculpture in the round

The sculpture communicates volume as it occupies space, and mass as it expresses solidity

Eberle creates balance in the piece as he sculpted the young girl standing up straight with her arms out to either side. It makes her seem in control of her skating

The young girls face was sculpted in such a way that she portrays a feeling of both excitement and nervousness.

The Life Line

the life line

“The Life Line” by: Winslow Homer (1884)

The focal point are the two men in the center not only because they are the only people in the picture but because the three different wires all connect in the middle drawing your eye to the men.

There is a use of atmospheric perspective as the distant ship lacks detail and sharpness

The painting is done in generally monochromatic color of different values of gray, however the one pop of red in the center of the piece contributes to the men being the focal point

Homer creates space in the piece by drawing the two men larger than the ship, waves, and rocks in the background to express that the men are closer to the viewer.

Salon Interior

“Salon Interior” by. A Redkovsky

Redkovsky uses pattern to create unity in this painting. Not only is the floor tile a pattern but the similar columns and placement of chairs also creates pattern and therefore unity

The pattern and unity give the painting balance

Everything in this painting is very ornate relating a message of grandeur and that the people who live here are wealthy

The recurring items in this painting- columns, chairs, tile- give it rhythm and lead the eye towards the back wall where there is a fancy mirror and couch

The mirror is drawn on a hierarchal scale making it seem important in this painting.
