The Bright Side” by Winslow Homer

The use of implied line goes around the painting as the downward sloping line of the teepee draws our eye down and then across to the left following the line of men, and then back following the line of the wagons

There was intentional use of color and contrast as the light falls right on the man that is coming out of the tent

This piece feels very balanced because of the weight of the resting men in the foreground and the wagons in the background

This painting has high contrast of the man’s face against the bright blue sky

The earthy tones in this painting make it seem very serene and calm

The Fog Warning” by Winslow Homer

Homer uses the seaman as the focal point as he is the center point connecting the oars and the two ends of the boat

He also uses weight at the bottom of the painting with the fish and the barrel in the boat

There is strong contrast between the light sky and the dark fog rolling in and the dark color of the water. This contributes to the feeling that something is looming ahead.

There is also use of implied line as the audience follows the seamans line of vision as he is looking to the right- out to sea- drawing our attention to the smaller scale ship in the distance
